Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/27/2023
From a special time in hockey history, when the World Hockey Association arrived on the scene, up for grabs here is this assembly of 1972-73 O-Pee-Chee hockey cards including a near complete set (296/341) as well as a complete set of the Players Crests (22/22), near complete set of the Team Canada subset (27/28) and partial set of the Team Emblems (17/30). Led by an assembly of eighteen (18) KSA graded offerings from the main set, the group is led by NMM+ 8.5 examples of 124-Pete Mahovlich and 334-3rd Series Checklist, with those two followed closely behind by NMM 8’s of 114-Brad Park and 129-Bobby Orr. NM+ 7.5’s total five (5) and include 6-1st Series Checklist, 111-Phil Esposito, 136-Gilbert Perreault, 280-NHL Scoring Leaders and 283-NHL Assist Leaders. Followed up by NM 7’s of 177-Mikita, 190-2nd Series Checklist and 230-P. Esposito AS, a lone ENM+ 6.5 of 188-Sittler is present while ENM 6’s includes the cardboard of 19-2nd Series Checklist, 102-Frank Mahovlich (mislabelled as card #107 on the label), 105-Rick MacLeish and 137-T. Esposito. The last graded card included comes in the form of a VGE 4 of card #145 picturing Ken Dryden over the front. For the rest of the set, missing most of the cards from number 300 to 341, the cards generally seem to reflect condition-wise the cards that have already been graded by KSA, with a small portion in lower condition including cards that have wax stains on their fronts as well as a small amount of cards in low grade exhibiting creases and/or damage too corners. For the subsets, the Player Crests, a complete set of 22, are led by KSA graded examples of Orr and Dryden, both having earned ENM+ 6.5 marks while the rest are likely around the range of VG to VG-EX with some better as well. For the Team Canada cards, the group of 28 is missing only Gary Bergman with most of the others in the vicinity of VG-EX to EX condition with some possibly better while cards of Cournoyer and Dryden as both creased/dinged at the left side edge. Lastly, for the Team Emblems, the group is in the uniform condition scope of VG to VG-EX in our opinion.
It must be noted that the grading standards followed by KSA may not correspond to those currently employed by PSA, BGS or SGC. The outcome of an attempted cross-over of this piece through any of those services, then, would be uncertain and cannot be guaranteed.
