Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/27/2023
Featuring some of the best names to every play in the National Football League and hailing from an era in which the game of football was played in a much rougher and more tumble way than it is now, up for grabs here is this collection of 1950s to 1970s Bowman and Topps football cards that totals thirty-three and included the likes of Unitas, Starr, Gifford, Sayers, Namath and others. Starting with the Unitas specimens, the Super Bowl V champion is seen over the front of his 1958 Topps, 1960 Topps, 1963 Topps and 1969 Topps cards. With his two earliest cards likely falling in the range of GOOD to GOOD+, the 1958 card shows surface wear and wax residue over the front while the 1960 card exhibits a couple of light creases extending towards the middle at either edge as well as a surface defect in the middle of his hair. For the final two cards, the 1963 card is in the scope of VG-EX to EX despite the image being out of focus while the 1969 card is seen as falling in the neighbourhood of VG to VG-EX with edge dings. For Bart Starr, included are his cards from 1958 Topps (VG – edge and corner wear, light surface wear on front and back) and 1969 Topps (VG to VG-EX – light corner and edge wear with surface wear on the reverse while Frank Gifford is seen over the front of his 1954 Bowman (GOOD – light crease over the front along with corner wear/dings) , 1955 Bowman (G to VG – corner and edge wear with a small crease at bottom right point), 1957 Topps (G to VG – surface wear/residue over the front) and 1960 Topps (GOOD – large crease on the reverse as well as surface wear, corner wear and edge wear). For cards of Gale Sayers, his 1968 Topps, 1969 Topps (x2) and 1970 Topps examples are included with the earliest of them found to be in the scope of GOOD condition due to a crease and corner wear while the 1969 cards seem to be around GOOD and G to VG conditions respectively and finally the 1970 example is around VG-EX to EX but is completely off-center from right-to-left. Any good vintage football lot can’t be without “Broadway Joe”, who is seen in this one via his 1967 Topps, 1971 Topps and 1973 Topps cards. The 1967 examples falls into the vicinity of VG condition though is miscut at the top and shows light wax residue over the front while the 1971 card is around VG to VG-EX and the 1973 is perceived as being VG-EX to EX. For the rest of the notables, included are the those of Jim Brown’s 1959 Topps card (VG-EX to EX – light corner wear and a small ding at bottom right), Frank Tarkenton’s 1963 Topps card (VG to VG-EX – light corner wear with some surface scratches and edge wear at left side), Norm Van Brocklin’s 1954 Bowman card (EX to EX-MT – light surface scratches), George Blanda’s 1956 Topps card (G to VG – surface and corner wear, 95-5 centering left-to-right), Pat Summerall’s 1955 Bowman card (VG – edge and corner wear/dings), Jack Kemp’s 1961 Topps card (G to VG – large edge ding at top along with some surface and edge wear, off-center a tad right-to-left) and finaly, Elroy Hirsch’s 1956 Topps card (VG to VG-EX – light corner wear).
