The first national basketball card set in eight (8) years, Topps' 1969-70 basketball release proved to collectors of all ages at the time of its release (and even all these years later) that that bigger can be better, especially when covering the giants of the hardcourt but also by being helped by the fact that the vintage NBA set has one of the most popular basketball rookie cards in history within its checklist. Featuring a grand total of 99-cards, up for grabs here is this complete assembly of Topps’ 1969-70 basketball release. Led by the key rookie card of then Lew Alcindor (better known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) that has been assigned a grade of PR 1 after inspection by PSA, largely due to a crease and a pin hole at the top, an additional PSA holder houses the cardboard of the set’s lead-off card, picturing HOFer Wilt Chamberlain that has been assessed a mark of EX-MT 6 for its effort. For the rest of the set, originally sold in 10-card packs that that cost .10 cents each and came with a stick of gum, the group is found to be in the lower to mid-grade range of G to VG and VG to VG-EX throughout with many having corner wear and some having creases. For the notables, the likes of 15-Hawkins (light corner wear), 45-Lucas (corner wear), 50-Robertson (light corner wear and small tiny surface scuff), 60-Reed (corner wear) and 90-West (two corners with small dings) are all seen as being in the scope of VG to VG-EX condition and are followed behind by G to VG offerings of 10-Thurmond (dings to all four corners and a dent over his face), 20-Havlicek (top right corner damage) and 98-Frazier (light factory surface bubbling plus a tiny pinhole like bump). Concluding the notables, the cards of 75-Hayes (corner ding and water stain at top left) and 80-Monroe (creased and corner wear/dings) are seen as being in the range of FR to G while the lastly, card #43 of Bill Bradley is around PR to FR because of multiple creases. Of note, it is worth mentioning for accuracy that the checklist card, #99 in the set, is marked and that there are a small amount of better condition VG-EX to EX cards throughout as seen in the notables.
