Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/27/2023
Both a professional hockey and lacrosse star of the era, the last card of the first ever hockey card set produced by Imperial Tobacco profiles HOFer Edouard "Newsy" Lalonde over the front of card #36 in the 1910-11 C56 assembly. Considered to be one of the original “Flying Frenchmen”, Lalonde is pictured in a Renfrew sweater, although the scoring sensation was actually lighting it up with the Montreal Canadiens that winter, scoring 19 goals in 16 games during the Montreal Canadiens inaugural season. Recently examined by the graders at PSA, they have deemed the 113-year-old card worthy of a respectable mid-grade mark of EX 5. Showing off-center left-to-right, toning is seen over both the front and back while the corners, colours, and edges are all attributes to say “wow!” to. Housed in a PSA holder that shows just a couple of light scratches over both sides it should be noted that of the 136 examples submitted to PSA over the years, this pop-8 example has only been bested by 8 cards graded higher; two (2) PSA 6 Q’s, four (4) PSA 6’s, one (1) PSA 6.5 and one (1) PSA 7, ensuring that you and your all-important collection are getting a top of the heap specimen of one of hockey’s forefathers and greatest players.
