This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/27/2023
A complete set of the very first hockey cards, available to consumers in packages of cigarettes well over 100 years ago and offered to serious collectors here constitutes a hobby happening, with several of the men responsible for making early professional hockey a happening featured amid the three dozen well-preserved darlings. All designated as RC’s the set is led by a group of twelve (12) PSA graded cards, a mix of older and freshly graded offerings, the dozen examples are paced by the cardboard of HOFers Cyclone Taylor and Art Ross, who have both had their cards assessed grades of GOOD 2 though Ross’ card does also come with an “MK” qualifier over the label. For the rest of the older style PSA holders, VG-EX 4’s are included of Herb Clark, Marty Walsh and Art Bernier, as is a lone VG 3 of Angus Campbell. For the recently graded examples, copies of cards #2 and #28 picturing Percy Lesueur and Paddy Moran over their respective fronts have both earned marks of VG-EX 4 and are followed by a VG+ 3.5 of Frank Patrick, VG 3’s of Art Ross and Lester Patrick and a PR 1 of Newsy Lalonde. For the rest of the cards, all found in raw ungraded form, examples seen in the range of VG-EX include those of #’s 16-Cattarinigh (HOF) and 17-Stuart (HOF) while cards found to be in the scope of VG total nine (9) and include those of 10-Hyland (HOF), 13-Decary, 14-Dunderdale (HOF), 18-Bawlf, 22-Hern (HOF), 23-Pitre (HOF), 27-Lake, 29-Toms and 32-McNamara. For cards seen as being in the vicinity of GOOD condition we have the examples #’s 19-Jones, 21-Laviolette (HOF), 30-Johnston (HOF) and 34-Ridpath while those viewed in the scope of FR include 5-Glass, 6-Dey, 24-Poulin and 31-Gaul. Lastly, cards seen as being in the range of PR include the cardboard of 4-Holden, 20-Russell (HOF), 33-Marshall (HOF) and 35-Marshall (HOF) while the final card, that of #3 picturing Gordon Roberts of the Ottawa Senators is labeled as ALTERED due to evidence of trimming. A true treasure to behold that is worthy of serious consideration.
