Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/27/2023
Hailing from an era of hockey when Wayne Gretzky was starting his sheer domination of the National Hockey League, up for grabs here is this collection of three (3) early-1980s O-Pee-Chee releases from 1980-81, 1981-82 and 1982-83 with all three (3) complete and consisting of 396-cards each. Starting with the 1980-81 assembly, the important 2nd year card of “The Great One” as well as his “All-Star” and “Record Breaker” examples and the Oilers team checklist picturing the phenom are all in the range of EX-MT to NM, something that is consistent throughout the whole group, with the checklist remaining unmarked. The rookie cards of Bourque (80-20 centering), Messier (slightly off-center top-to-bottom), Langway and Gartner (80-20 centering) are all in the scope of EX-MT to NM condition while the first-year cardboard of Goulet is closer to EX-MT with a very small ding at the bottom left corner. Two other Gretzky record breaker/leader cards are included within the group of 396, joining unmarked team and main series checklists.
For the ’81-82’s, representing Wayne’s third season, the set is once again in a uniform condition range of EX-MT to NM and is highlighted by the rookie cards of Denis Savard, Jarri Kurri, Paul Coffey (75-25 centering), and Peter Stastny, all displaying characteristics that put them in the previously mentioned EX-MT to NM scope while Dino Ciccarelli’s first-year card is a bit worse off at EX to EX-MT due to slight factory ink bleed at the top. Gretzky is of course a commonplace find, appearing over the front of six (6) different cards, all of which are found in the vicinity of EX-MT to NM except for card #383, his “Assist Leaders” card, that falls in at EX to EX-MT range. The 2nd year cards of teammate Mark Messier (80-20 centering) and Ray Bourque are both in the range of EX to EX-MT as well while card #347, Mike Gartner’s 2nd year card is creased. All three checklist cards are unmarked and the of the stars in the assembly are in set consistent conditions as well.
Completing the trio is the ensemble from ’82-83. Once again in a consistent EX-MT to NM condition range except for card #106 of Gretzky that has a dent on the front left side which drops it closer to VG to VG-EX. Cards #26 of Foligno and #63 of Crossman are both creased while the rookies of Fuhr, Francis, Mullen and Hawerchuk are all in EX-MT to NM condition along with the key cards of 7-Bourque, 101-Coffey, 107-Gretzky In Action and 117-Messier. Additionally, cards #1 (small ding top right corner and 70-30 centering), #99 (wax stain on front and light border discolouration) and #242 of “The Great One are all in EX to EX-MT range and are accompanied by other Gretzky’s (#235, #237, #240 and #243) that are all better at EX-MT to NM range. The three checklist cards are all unmarked and like the rest of the star players in the set, are in a set consistent condition range. Seldomly handled and an excellent opportunity for both collectors and investors alike, don’t let these pass you by!
