Always an enticing set for collectors to add to their inventory, the 1970-71 O-Pee-Chee release consisted of bright colours and a 264-card checklist, with this complete assembly of the release up for grabs here headlined by a total of thirty-four (34) KSA graded offerings. Highlighted by a rookie class that includes examples for HOFers Bobby Clarke (NM+ 7.5), Gilbert Perreault (ENM 6 – error on the label, says “all-star” instead of “rookie card”), Darryl Sittler (VGE 4) and Brad Park (ENM+ 6.5) while the first-year card of Guy Lapointe remains in raw ungraded form and presents in the range of VG-EX to EX condition largely due to wear/dings to the bottom two corners and some residue on the surface. For the rest of the graded cards, Bill Inglis leads the way with his card having been assessed a MINT 9 while 143-McMahan and 212-Picard follow close behind at NMM+ 8.5. For NMM 8’s, included are the likes of 159-Wayne Connolly, 176-Richard and 225-Tallon RC while NM+ 7.5’s feature the examples of 20-Mikita, 169-Williams, 227-Corrigan (misspelt on the label), 254-Stanley Cup and 259-Vezina Trophy. NM 7’s include the cards of 55-Beliveau, 78-Parent, 151-Magnuson RC, 236-Orr All-Star, 239-Park All-Star, 246-Orr Hart Trophy and 249-Orr Art Ross while ENM+ 6.5’s include 3-Orr, 29-Howe, 158-Libett, 219-Keon, 222-Plante, 235-Hull All-Star and 238-Howe All-Star. To round out the group, cards of 15-Hull, 59-Horton and 230-Lunde have all been assessed marks of ENM 6 while Terry Sawchuk’s card, number 231 in the checklist, and Bobby Orr’s Conn Smythe winner card, have both earned EX 5 designations. For the rest of the cards, all found in raw ungraded form, the cards of both Jacques Lemaire and Derek Sanderson are signed with bold blue marker ink signatures that display without issue while the rest generally seem in slightly-less better condition than the cards which have been graded by KSA with the raw cards in the mid-grade vicinity though a portion of them are a bit worse off as well. Additionally, a small number of the cards show creases (including the lead off card of Gerry Cheevers) or wax stains that is worth mentioning for accuracy.
It must be noted that the grading standards followed by KSA may not correspond to those currently employed by PSA, BGS or SGC. The outcome of an attempted cross-over of this piece through any of those services, then, would be uncertain and cannot be guaranteed.
