Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023

Created with the relocation of the unsuccessful Los Angeles Sharks to the Detroit area following the 1973-74 WHA season, the Michigan Stags lasted a mere 43 games before folding due to financial difficulties in January of 1975. As such, any and all surviving Stags jerseys are especially rare and sought by collectors, especially when worn by a very prominent player. This Stags jersey was worn by the second professional player to score 70 goals in a single season, WHA star Mark Tardif. This example shows evidence of a former nameplate, with Bill Goldthorpe and Steve Richardson also listed as wearing the number 9 that season. Wilson labeling with “48” sizing sits along the collar, with a multi-coloured and partially-embroidered team crest utilized. “9” in layered tackle twill is sewn to the sleeves and verso, with "Tardif" across the nameplate. The vintage garment also sports a garter-style fight strap. Showing puckering to the inside of the team crest and reverse number, there are a few small stains to the front and paint transfer to the front and reverse and sleeves, with a few scuff marks to each sleeve. A team repair is present beneath the team crest, with pilling to the interior sleeves. Tardif would score 17 points in just 23 games with the Stags.
