Drafted 14th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in 1972, John Van Boxmeer spent the majority of his career split between Colorado and Buffalo, with numerous coaching gigs following his playing days. We have a highly sought vintage Buffalo Sabres jersey worn by the Petrolia native in 1979-80, his first of four seasons with the club. A Maska Superfil label is affixed to the collar, with the durene V-neck sweater measuring-out to approx a size 54. Featuring an attractive tackle twill team crest with chain-stitched sabres, “5” appears over the sleeves and verso in yellow-over-white twill, with matching team patches over each shoulder. The intact loop-style fight strap has an added leather suspender fastener, with “VanBoxmeer” across the affixed satin nameplate in single yellow twill. The jersey also sports the important 1980 Olympic crest over the right breast, with the Islanders the only other NHL club to don the patriotic emblem leading up to those memorable games.
The original laundering label with sizing is no longer affixed to the collar, with two embroidered Maska crests over the bottom hem, one on the front left, the other on the reverse right. Seeing a ton of NHL use, the jersey sports board burns along with paint transfer over the left elbow and right shoulder, with some scuffing over the lower front. Over 20 repairs are present, including 6 over the front, 10 on the reverse, 6 over the right sleeve and a pair over the left.
