Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/2/2023
The Ottawa City League was one of the earliest hockey leagues formed in 1890, ceasing operations in 1957. The Ottawa Rideaus competed in the league and won the championship in 1931 and 1933, with the 1933 squad apparently owned or coached by HOFer Harry "Punch" Broadbent. Originating from his personal collection, we have a group of 9 telegrams from 1933 addressed to Broadbent, wishing "his" team the Rideaus luck in the championship. Each is hoping Broadbent and his team successful, with one of the telegrams having "Care Montreal Maroons The Arena Ottawa Ont To On The Bit "Punch" Al Plunkett - with a handwritten notation of "Montreal won 1 to 0 winning NHL Championship". The majority show toning and fold lines along with a few small edge tears. Accompanying, also from Broadbent's collection, we have a team photo postcard of the 1909-10 Smith Falls Rough Riders. The front is clean with a few indentations and small creases, with glue and scrapbook residue on the reverse.
