Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/2/2023
Featuring a barrage of colourful backgrounds and posed portrait style images, this appealing assembly of Topps’ 1970-71 hockey release hails complete with all 132 cards being accounted for in a consistent VG-EX to EX condition range with some EX-MT examples mixed throughout as well along with some common cards that sport a crease or two. Led by a trio of graded offerings that include Wayne Cashman and Bernie Parent earning a PSA NM-MT 8 and NM 7 respectively, Rod Gilbert’s card has also been examined and slabbed, deemed worthy of a NMM 8 from KSA. Displaying corner wear as the most commonly observed flaw, present on most of the 132-cards, the key cards are led by EX to EX-MT range findings of Bobby Orr and Jean Beliveau while 1-Cheevers, 11-P. Esposito and 29-Howe fall a bit below, landing in the scope of EX to EX+ with slight wear at all four corners of all three cards. Bobby Hull and Tim Horton find themselves in the scope of EX condition with the Hull showing slight corner wear while the key rookie cards of Brad Park and Gilbert Perreault fall in around EX and VG conditions respectively with the first year offering of Perreault plagued by a stain on the reverse, corner dings and some surface wear. Card #22 of Frank Mahovlich (stains) is joined the checklist, card #132, in the realm of VG shape with the checklist having been marked while the cards of Stan Mikita (creased) and Jacques Lemaire (corner wear + off-center) round out the notables with both presenting in the range of G (good). While not perfect, the set is sure to be a wonderful trip down memory lane for our lucky winning bidder.
It must be noted that the grading standards followed by KSA may not correspond to those currently employed by PSA, BGS or SGC. The outcome of an attempted cross-over of this piece through any of those services, then, would be uncertain and cannot be guaranteed.
