This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/2/2023
A sport for which its pre-war card sets are alluring in any condition, the 1933-34 Canadian Chewing Gum V252 hockey release featured numerous rink legends of the era that would go on to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame and was one of the first sets to have its cards released with chewing gum included in the packs. The complete 50-card assembly up for grabs here is highlighted by a group of freshly graded PSA slabbed offerings that includes the rookie cards of Chuck Gardiner (VG-EX 4), Lionel Conacher (VG+ 3.5) and George Hainsworth (VG-EX 4) as well as cards picturing Aurel Joliat (EX 5) and Howie Morenz (VG 3). For the rest of the encapsulated specimens, the first-year cardboard of Babe Siebert and Charlie Conacher have both garnered marks of VG 3 while that of Harvey Jackson shows a slightly better VG+ 3.5 designation. Lastly, the cards of Nelson Stewart and King Clancy have also been graded, deemed worthy of EX 5 and VG 3 marks respectively after inspection. For the raw cards that make up the remaining 80% of the set, the best of the bunch are VG-EX to EX offerings of Alex Connell, George Mantha (RC) and Johnny Sorrell (RC) while those in the scope of VG-EX total ten (10) and include the likes of; Bostrom (RC), Brydson (RC), Carson (RC), Chabot (RC), Clapper (RC - HOF), Gottselig (RC - small crease on reverse), Heller (RC), Lepine (RC), Roach and Ward (RC).
The group of cards falling into the neighbourhood of VG to VG-EX is the biggest present and includes the likes of; Abel (RC - small crease bottom left corner), Aurie (RC - minor crease bottom left corner), Bailey (RC - HOF - minor crease top right corner), Brydge (RC - minor crease), Burke (RC - minor crease at right edge), Cook (RC - HOF – crease and scratches), Cox (RC - minor crease bottom edge), Day (HOF – light stain on reverse), Dillon (RC - crease at bottom), Dutkowski (RC - stains), Emms (RC - scratches and hit marks), Finnigan (minor creases at top edge), Goodfellow (RC - HOF – creases), Kerr (RC - a few small creases), Sheppard (minor crease plus white spot), Smith (RC - minor creases top left corner), Trottier (RC - small creases top right), Touhey (RC - chipped lower left corner) and Wasnie (RC - small creases at left border).
For cards seen as being in the range of GOOD to VG we have the examples picturing Duguid (RC), Gracie (RC – multiple creases), Himes (RC – stain and damage lower left edge), Horner (RC – multiple creases), Jackson (RC – wax and other stains), Murdoch (RC – numerous small creases and stains) and Northcott (RC – wear to corners plus stain) while the FR to GOOD card of Red Dutton (RC) with multiple creases rounds out the set. Additionally, a second copy of Lionel Conacher’s card is included, falling in the scope of FR to GOOD due to creases and stains. A fabulous group of enticing relics sure to enhance your pre-war card collection!
