Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2023

Two dozen cards, all but two of them considered rookie cards, followed up O-Pee-Chee’s initial (48-card) release of 1933-34 – what a swell time for kids and fans it must have been, with other gum companies also getting involved with producing hockey cards. The colorful and very pleasing gathering here is led a quartet of freshly graded PSA cards that includes the Series “B” leader in terms of importance/value, HOFer Aurele Joliat, with card #50 receiving a VG-EX 4 (MC) verdict and followed behind by slabs housing the first year cardboard of HOFers Tiny Thompson (EX 5), Babe Siebert (EX 5) and Alex Smith (VG 3). For the rest of the set, presented in raw ungraded form, the card of #64 Glen Brydson’s RC is seen as being in the best condition of the bunch, around the scope of EX while those around VG-EX include the RC’s of #’s 55-Robinson (crease), 58-Duguid, 60-Northcott and 65-Ayres. Cards in the vicinity of VG make up the largest group and include the cards of 51-Aurie, 53-Roach, 54-Beveridge, 57-Wilcox, 62-Trottier, 63-Kilrea, 66-Gracie, 67-Ripley and 70-Blair. Rounding out the complete set, cards of Ebbie Goodfellow, Dave Kerr and Cecil Dillon are seen as being in the neighbourhood of GOOD while the cardboard of Jimmy Ward, Marvin Wentworth and Bun Cook is unfortunately in the condition vicinity of PR. A wonderful treasure trove of lovely pre-war cards, a group of nine (9) extras is also included featuring additional cards of Vernon Ayers and Robert Gracie around VG-EX, Aurel Joliat, W. S. Beveridge, Wally Kilrea, Glen Brysdon and Alex Smith in the scope of VG and lastly, Marvin Wentworth and Tiny Thompson around the neighbourhood of GOOD.
