Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/2/2023
A fabulous opportunity to score a coveted pre-war hockey card set is offered here, with the charming little cards found almost a century ago in sweets produced by Maple Crispette, a Montreal confectioner. Kids/collectors could exchange a 30-card set for a pair of new skates, with Sprague Cleghorn’s card short-printed to limit the amount of contest redemptions and thus considered rare. Led a by a freshly graded trio of Montreal Canadiens legends that includes HOFers Howie Morenz (Good 2), #13 George Vezina (EX 5) and #14 Aurele Joliat (EX 5), the last of the encapsulated cards features the specimen of former Canadiens star, Newsy Lalonde, who has garnered a VG-EX 4 for his effort. For the rest of the set, of course missing the previously mentioned Cleghorn SP though still considered complete without it, card #24 of Ken Randall is seen as the best of the bunch condition wise, falling into the range of VG-EX, and is followed by VG vicinity examples of 1-Munro (RC), 2-Benedict, 4-Headley (RC), 5-Skinner (RC), 9-Cooper (RC), 10-Red Green, 11-Boucher, 16-Cain (RC), 17-Dinsmore (RC), 20-Carroll (RC), 21-Burch, 23-Roach, 25-Forbes, 26-Langlois (RC) and 29-Scott (RC). Rounding out the set, the cards of 3-Fowler (RC), 7-Herberts (RC), 19-Rothschild (RC), 22-Shorty Green, 28-Lowrey (RC) and 30-Berlinguette (RC) are seen as being in the neighbourhood of GOOD, as is an additional copy of Aurele Joliat’s card #14, while the cards of 6-Cook (RC), 8-Harris (RC) and 18-Broadbent are seen as being PR along with an additional copy of Sammy Rothschild’s card #19. Featuring first-year Boston Bruins and Montreal Maroons, along with players from the Hamilton Tigers (in the Tigers’ last season) this ensemble is poised to enhance your pre-war card shrine.
