Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/2/2023
The Ontario Rugby Football Union was founded 1883, and twenty years later, in 1903, became the first major competition to adopt the Burnside rules, from which the modern Canadian football code would evolve. A number of noteworthy and historic football teams played in the league, and we offer cabinet photos for two of these clubs. First, we have a 1919 Hamilton Tigers photo that shows the full squad in composite cameo images, with the photographer Cunningham listed over the bottom right. Framed to 15 1/2" x 20", the photo sports a few minor blemishes/marks with some damage to the mount at the bottom corners and over the left hand side. Next, we have a 1915 Rowing Club Football Club framed panoramic team photo (most likely Hamilton or Toronto). At approx 4" x 20" and affixed to a larger mount at roughly 8" x 24", the full team is lined up on the field, with "Rowing Club Football Club 1915" handwritten to the mount. Set in a frame to 9" x 26", the photo is flawless, with some water damage to the mount. These important photos of a historic Canadian football team both show wear to the frames.
