Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/2/2023
In the infancy of his 32 years spent playing professional hockey, Gordie Howe was just a young man from rural Saskatchewan trying to make his place in the old six team National Hockey League with the number “17” seen on the back of his Red Wings sweaters instead of his famed number “9” which he would switch to halfway through his sophomore season of play in Motor City. Offered here, is this Red Wings jersey that has been signed by “Mr. Hockey” that displays his original rookie number of “17”. A CCM made garment with brand and size “XL” tagging affixed to the inner collar, the front of the jersey is decorated with Detroit’s famous winged wheel crest while the sleeves and verso have been accented with tackle twill numbers and letters. Still featuring the original tags hanging from the left wrist, Howe has signed the top of the reverse number “7” with a fine silver ink signature and has added a “1946” annotation underneath in matching ink with both examples of his penmanship displaying without issue. An AJ Sports World hologram has been affixed underneath and is accompanied by a matching COA.
