With roots dating all the way back to 18th century and said to have been “invented” by Abner Doubleday in 1839, baseball continues to be the national pastime of the United States of America, with the boys of summer the subject of this lot up for grabs in the form of a 1950s to 2000s Topps, O-Pee-Chee, Fleer, Donruss and Upper Deck baseball card collection that includes stars and rookies, totaling approx. 2500+. Including both vintage and modern cards, key examples include a 1959 Topps N.L. Hitting Kings example of Richie Ashburn and Willie Mays that is found in the range of VG-EX/EX and a 1968 Topps Frank Robinson that is observed in the same condition range. Other noteworthy examples include 1971 Topps specimens of Rod Carew (EX-MT+), Al Kaline (EX – 70-30 centering), Steve Carlton (VG-EX/EX), and Willie McCovey (EX+) while a ’71 OPC rookie card of Bert Blyleven in EX vicinity is also present. Continuing on, Johnny Bench’s 1972 Topps card is included, found in the scope of VG-EX while Jim Palmer and Tom Seaver are pictured on the front of Topps and OPC cardboard from 1974 respectively in EX and VG condition vicinities. Seaver and Bench are seen again over 1975 OPC and Topps examples in EX and EX-MT+ conditions while Pete Rose’s 1976 Topps card is also found around the range of EX-MT+ as well. Fireball pitcher Nolan Ryan is pictured on the front of his 1979 OPC specimen in EX condition, joined by the rookie of Ozzie Smith from the same assembly in the scope of EX-MT. Rounding out the keys, are rookie cards of Harold Baines (1981 OPC), Wade Boggs (1983 Donruss), Roger Clemens (1985 Topps) and Ken Griffey Jr. (1989 Donruss), with the first three in the range of EX-MT/NM condition while “The Kid” is found around EX/EX-MT. With most of the collection in mid-grade with higher grades found as you get towards the newer cards, older ones are more towards lower grade examples. Good groups of 1970s sets are included with the most notable years being 1971, 1974, 1975, 1976, and 1979 with Tom Seaver and Phil Niekro examples present as well. Lastly, a near complete 1985 Topps set is included with only six (6) common cards unaccounted for and those that are, including the Clemens, Puckett and McGwire rookie cards, presenting in the scope of EX-MT/NM.
