Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2024

Perhaps the most famous hockey card set of all-time, cards from O-Pee-Chee’s 1979-80 release came in wax packs that contained 14 cards and cost young ones 20 cents, with the rookie cards of a young phenom by the name of Wayne Gretzky coveted by all by seasons end. Off-center both top-to-bottom as well as a bit from left-to-right, but displaying with good colours and clean surfaces, some corner wear and a slight stain to the top left corner are to mention about this copy of card #18 that pictures Wayne Gretzky, which has earned a mark of VGEX 4 from ACA, leads the way for this 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee complete set of 396 cards. For the other 395 cards making up the rest of the assembly, which are found to be in an overall uniform condition range of VG-EX to EX with many sporting corner wear or small dings, the team checklist cards that are found from #244-261 are all found in an unmarked state. For the key cards, #40 of Borje Salming is the group's condition leader, falling into the vicinity of EX with light corner wear while cards #81 and #230 of the Jets logo checklist and Mike Bossy are both in the proximity of VG-EX to EX with the Jets example sporting a top left corner ding and the Bossy light corner wear. Also including a VG-EX example of the Oilers logo checklist (#82) that shows with corner wear, cards #125 of Bobby Clarke and #185 of Bobby Hull are in the range of VG to VG-EX condition with the Clarke being completely off-center and the Hull corner wear. Rounding out the key cards, 150-Dryden (crease at top left), 175-Howe (right border dented) and 200-Lafleur (light corner wear and a crease at the bottom left) are all in the realm of GOOD condition for their efforts. Lastly, for the three (3) main series checklist cards, which are all unmarked, #131 is around G to VG and shows with a top left corner crease while #237 is in the same grade neighbourhood and has a tiny crease at the bottom border. Finally, checklist #346 is the best of the trio, in the scope of VG-EX to EX condition and displaying with centering issues. With other star cards in a condition that is consistent with the rest of the set, the assembly make for a satisfying offering that is sure to please our lucky winning bidder!
It must be noted that the grading standards followed by ACA may not correspond to those currently employed by PSA, BGS or SGC. The outcome of an attempted cross-over of this piece through any of those services, then, would be uncertain and cannot be guaranteed.
