Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023

Another fabulous find of a scarce Babe Ruth card in Canada occurred recently, with this Maple Crispette issue sure to excite serious collectors and intrigue others. Returning from PSA premises after receiving a VG-EX 4 verdict, card #8 is one of just 29 such cards ever assessed by PSA since the firm’s inception, with the (Pop 6) example bettered by just six others; one NM 7, one EX-MT 6, two EX 5s and two at VG-EX+ 4.5. Like on the card front, Ruth would have been smiling at the conclusion of the 1923 season, winning his first of four World Series championships as a Yankee. However, as hobby veteran Bobby Burrell points out in his ultra-informative Vintage Hockey Collector books, it’s very debatable (and impossible in the eyes of many) that the Maple Crispette ball cards were issued during the 1923 campaign, as the reverse offers consumers free baseball equipment in exchange for a complete baseball set (of 30 cards) but also states that an assortment with hockey player cards would also be redeemable. With the Maple Crispette hockey cards issued during the 1924-25 season, the baseball cards must have come out in 1925 and not 1923 as currently archived. Yes, interesting indeed, with the cards, by the way, inserted into products produced by Montreal confectioner Maple Crispette. A delectable treat this card will be when it is delivered….in a new scratch-free PSA holder. In a word, fantastique!
