Leading the NHL in penalty minutes twice during his career, Sean Avery went undrafted, and first signed with Detroit as a free agent in 1999. The North York native would represent four different NHL clubs, and conclude his tenure in the AHL with Connecticut. One of the more colourful figures in the game during his time, up for grabs here is this collection of equipment worn by Avery in the late-2000s during his first tenure with the Rangers including a pair of gloves, pair of pants and a helmet. Starting with the helmet, dating to the 2007-08 pre-season, a CCM model in the Rangers familiar blue colour, “NYR” decals are applied to each side with additional stickers for the NHL and Garden of Dreams charity affixed to the reverse. Remaining in good condition with light wear exhibited, marks and abrasions are seen throughout including a deep scratch on the right side. Oxidization is present on the chin strap fastener as well. Additionally, Getty image #76956022 (September 21st, 2007 vs New Jersey) appears to show the previously mentioned deep scratch on the right side but it is not clear enough for us to call it a definitive photo-match. For the gloves, Eagle Fury models in New York’s red, white and blue colours, TPS and R8 logo that are embroidered into each thumb have been coloured over with marker ink in their corresponding colour. Void of any Avery identifiers but having been worn by him during the 2007-08 season as stated by the accompanying MeiGray LOA and COR, the gloves show light staining on the exterior and rubbing to the palms with the heaviest being seen on the right glove. Lastly, the pants date to having been worn by Sean around the same time as the gloves based on photos available on Getty. Made by Tackla, the bright red shorts with white and blue trimming do not display any brand, team or league patches while Avery’s number “16” has been penned in black marker on the inside tag. Remaining in good condition with light wear over each thigh in the form of stick marks and burns, a small tear is seen at the front left side near the skate lace tie up. The original Easton suspenders are also still present around the outside of the waist.
