Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/1/2023
Five-time Allan Cup winners in just six seasons beginning in 1911, Winnipeg teams dominated amateur hockey during the first decade of the 20th century. One of the city's most prominent teams, the 61st Overseas Battalion military team embarked for Great Britain on April 5, 1915, and provided reinforcements to the Canadian Corps in the field until July 7, 1916. This cabinet photo of the 61st Battalion features HOFer "Bullet" Joe Simpson. At approx 16" x 20", The full team is pictured in a studio shot, with the prominent photographer Bauslaugh & Taylor listed within the bottom right. There is some damage, with a tear to the matte that continues through a portion of the photo. Framed to full dimensions of approx 18 1/2" x 22 1/2", an original 61st Battalion military badge will also be included. While Classic Auctions has never handled an example of this cabinet photo, we did sell a postcard with matching image in 2006 for just under $600.00. Additionally, this photo was originally purchased from a prominent Selkirk collector along with the 1908 Selkirk Hockey Team photo also available from this collection. From the Brent Sobie antique hockey and baseball collection.
