Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/28/2023
One of the best players to ever put on the jersey of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Mario Lemieux was the only player that could compete with the likes of Wayne Gretzky at the height of both their careers. An intriguing lot is offered here for both collectors and investors alike, that includes a total of 10 Mario Lemieux OPC and Topps cards with have been graded. Headlined by Mario’s well known 1985-86 O-Pee-Chee rookie card, this particular copy of the sought after first year offering has been examined and slabbed by SGC, having been deemed worthy of a lofty “86 NM+” designation. An additional first year OPC card is also present in the lot, #262 in the set, listing Lemieux as the rookie scoring leader from the year prior. This one has been graded MINT 9 by AGA and displays slightly off center from right-to-left while also exhibiting toning to the front but having strong corners with light wear touches, good edges with only light chipping on the reverse and clean surfaces front and back. Two second year 1986-87 cards are present, both OPC releases and both graded with one earning a NM-MT 8 (OC) from PSA and the other an EX-MT+ 6.5 from Beckett. Other cards present include 1987-88 issues from both OPC and Topps, with the OPC example housed in an old PSA holder and displaying a MINT 9 mark while the Topps copies are ungraded but both remain in NM/NM-MT condition. The group is rounded out with a 1988-89 Topps example that has been graded as a perfect GEM MINT 10 by FGA and two copies of Mario’s 1989-90 O-Pee-Chee release that have both been graded NM-MT 8 by PSA with one having a “PD” distinction for print defect listed on the label. All the holders remain in good condition despite some of them being older examples, with only light scratches/scuffs found worth noting.
It must be noted that the grading standards followed by AGA and FGA may not correspond to those currently employed by PSA, BGS or SGC. The outcome of an attempted cross-over of this piece through any of those services, then, would be uncertain and cannot be guaranteed.
