Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/27/2023
Bursting onto the National Hockey League scene and immediately becoming the top-player in the circuit, Wayne Gretzky’s image was more often than not seen plastered over the front cover of all publications from the beginning to the end of his storied career. Offered here, is this collection of two (2) 1980s NHL Goal magazines/programs that feature Gretzky on the cover and have been signed by him as well. The first offering, dating to a game between the Oilers and Kings in Los Angeles on October 20th, 1983, the year the Oilers won their first Stanley Cup, has been signed on the cover by Gretzky as well as Kings players Jay Wells, Dean Jenkins and Charlie Simmer along with one other unidentified signature. On the interior, Kings players including Marcel Dionne, Dave Taylor, Bernie Nicholls (x2), and Dean Kennedy have penned their autographs. All done in either blue or black marker ink/ballpoint pen, the autographs display well for the most part and remain fully legible despite some fading from age on a couple over the cover. The other issue, hailing from the 1985-86 season, shows Wayne on the front having just scored a goal and has once again been signed by him in blue ballpoint pen with the autograph showing well with a slight bit of smudging at the top of the “W”. Joined on the cover by the signature of Oilers teammate Kevin McClelland, an additional unidentified autograph is found on page 24. Both publications themselves remain in good condition and sport some handling wear while remaining complete. Other flaws are present in the form of some wear to the spines, edges and corners as well as light creasing to the front and back covers of both, light surface wear to the front cover of the first issue and a couple of spots where the original owner tested their pen. A Shawn Chaulk LOA will accompany the piece.
