Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023

A thought-provoking image of Babe Ruth in Yankee pinstripes of the day headlines this Neilson’s Chocolate lot of relics, issued in Canada in Neilson’s “Big League” Chocolate Bars and closely resembling the 1922 American Caramel set. Type I cards were produced on paper stock, making for limited mid-to-high grade survivors. It’s unfortunate that write-ups are not included on the backs – Ruth’s would have informed of his 59 home runs in 1921, his second year with New York following a 54-homer debut in 1920. With multiple creases and paper loss on the reverse, card #37 has recently been graded PR 1 by PSA, with a similar Rogers Hornsby card leading the raw representatives. In similar condition but without paper loss are 13 others; #s 23-Miller, 39-Shawkey, 43-Jones, 49-Gerber, 57-Cooper, 60-Hargrave, 74-Aldridge, 80-Boeckel, 87-Kelleher, 93-Nehf, 95-Powell, 111-Ford and 112-Cunningham. ...Meanwhile, produced on card stock are Type II cards, with the offered group highlighted by Hall of Famers Grover Alexander, Eddie Collins, Red Faber, Burleigh Grimes, Harry Heilman and Joe Sewell. Although some present better than others, all are in the P-F-G realm. Also featured on the (unnumbered) cards are Blue, Burns (Boston), Callaghan, Caveney, Cheeves, Daubert, Duncan, Falk, Griffith, Hamilton, Hauser, S. Johnson, Menosky, Parkinson, Perkins, Reuther, Robertson, Schultz, Sheely, Tobin, Veach, Wambsganss, Cy Williams, Wingo, Wrightstone and Zachary. Marvelous in-action photos are swell to check out, with scarcity of the offered Ruth card evidenced by PSA Population Report numbers; there have been just 21 Type I Ruth submissions in PSA history.
