Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/19/2023
A complete set of the very first hockey cards, available to consumers in packages of cigarettes well over 100 years ago and offered to serious collectors here constitutes a hobby happening, with several of the men responsible for making early professional hockey a happening featured amid the three dozen making up the checklist. All designated as RC’s the set being offered here are all classified as being in a fair condition, having all been affixed in a scrapbook previously and showing paper residues and/or paper loss on their reverses. Having said that, most of the cards making up the offered assembly retain nice colours over their fronts and therefore display better than their low-grade "FR" technical designation for the most part. In terms of a breakdown, the examples of #9 Angus Campbell (HOF), #11 Herb Clark, #16 Joseph Cattarinich (HOF) and #31 Horace Gaul all display with no creases and nice corners while the cards of #3 Gordon Roberts (HOF) and #7 Marty Walsh (HOF) show with no creases to speak though both do have residue over their fronts. Continuing on, cards of #2 Percy Lesueur (HOF), #4 Barney Holden, #5 Frank Glass, #6 Edgar Day, #10 Harry Hyland (HOF), #13 Ed Decary, #14 Tom Dunderdale (HOF), #20 Ernest Russell (HOF), #23 Didier Pitre (HOF), #26 Lester Patrick (HOF), #29 C. Toms, #32 Harold McNamara and #33 Jack Marshall (HOF) all show a small crease while those of #15 Fred "Cyclone" Taylor (HOF), #17 Bruce Stuart (HOF) and #24 Skinner Poulin all sport a long crease. Lastly, the cards of #1 Frank Patrick (HOF), #8 Art Ross (HOF), #12 Art Ross (HOF), #18 Nick Bawlf, #19 Joseph Jones, #21 Jack Laviolette (HOF), #22 Riley Hern (HOF), #25 Art Bernier, #27 Fred Lake, #28 Paddy Moran (HOF), #30 Ernest Johnson (HOF), #34 Bruce Ridgpath, #35 Jack Marshall (HOF) and #36 Newsy Lalonde (HOF) all show multiple crease and/or other flaws. A true treasure to behold that is worthy of serious consideration.
