One of the most popular collectibles of the Original Six era, Bee Hive hockey player photos produced by the St. Lawrence Starch Co. were a staple for Canadian youth/hockey fans, with this huge lot encompassing a greater than 20-year period of NHL history. Up for grabs here and sure to pique the interest of many due to the volume included, is this collection of Bee Hive Group 2 (1945-64) and Group 3 (1964-67) hockey photos totalling north of 510 images. Made up of approximately 116 Group 2’s and 408 Group 3’s, all six NHL teams of the era are represented as well the league’s various trophies amongst the Group 3’s. Starting with the Group 2’s, the breakdown of teams are as follows, with key players noted: Boston – 17 (Bucyk, Lumley,) Chicago – 18 (Hull, Hall) Detroit – 16 (Howe, Sawchuk, Kelly, Delvecchio x2), Montreal – 17 (Plante, Geoffrion, H. Richard, Harvey), New York – 21 (Bathgate x2, Harvey, Howell, Worsley) and Toronto – 29 (Horton, Kelly, Keon, Lumley, Armstrong, Mahovlich, Bower x2), only a small number of duplicates are featured throughout the group other than what is noted above. For the Group 3’s, which definitely make up the bulk of the collection and include many duplicates, the breakdown of teams with key players noted include: Boston – 9 (Bovin x3), Chicago – 55 (P. Esposito x4, Hall x5, B. Hull x3, D. Hull x5, Mikita x2), Detroit – 49 (Delvecchio, Howe x4, Lindsay), Montreal – 102 (Beliveau x6, Cournoyer x6, Laperriere x6, H. Richard x5, M. Richard x5, Worsley x5), New York – 77 (Plante, Paille, Geoffrion x2, Giacomin x5, Gilbert x4, Hadfield x3, Howell x3, Ratelle x4, Seiling x3), Toronto – 81 (Armstrong x2, Bower x3, Bathgate, Broda x4, Ellis x5, Horton x3, Kelly x4, Kennedy x5, Keon x3, Mahovlich x2, Sawchuk x3, and Trophies – 35 (Byng x3, Calder x5, Hart x4, Prince of Wales x5, Norris x5, Art Ross x4, Stanley Cup x4, Vezina x5). Overall, condition of this lot, like most groups of Bee Hives' varies, with a majority showing flaws such as creases, bends, edge and corner wear/dings, stains, paper loss, dings, pencil marks, toning, tape marks and staple holes, including on the images of the star power players and trophies noted beside each team. Including none of the tougher short prints or variations to speak of, the collection of dealer lot quality is still sure to satisfy with lots of possibilities contained within this intriguing stash.
