Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/27/2023
Regarded by some as being a more competitive circuit than what the National Football League in the United States had to offer during this era, the Canadian Football League’s best are captured here in this lot that includes a complete 1961 Topps CFL set and a 1965 Topps partial set.
Starting with the complete 1961 assembly, 132 total cards make up the group with a fairly uniform mid-grade condition range of VG-EX to EX being observed throughout with light corner wear the main grade deflator. Those leading the huddle condition wise include the examples of cards #39 picturing Jackie Parker and #102, the checklist card, with both in the condition scope of EX to EX-MT. As mentioned, most of the set is in the grade vicinity of VG-EX to EX including the set keys of 1-Bailey (off-center), 4-Fleming (RC – light corner wear), 20-Kapp (off-center on the back and light corner wear), 47-Faloney (80-20 centering plus a small ding to the top right corner), 56-Patterson (light wear to all four corners), 79-Lancaster (RC – light corner wear) and 85-Stewart (RC – small surface dent and top right corner wear). Lastly, card #76 of Russ Jackson rounds out the notables and is found to be in the range of G to VG due to a bad top right corner.
For the 1965 contingent, 129 of 132 cards found in the checklist are included with the three that are missing being those of #6 Lonnie Dennis, #59 Joe Zuger and #60 of Checklist 1-60. An overall consistent mid-grade grouping of cards found to be in the scope of VG-EX, EX and EX-MT, the keys that pace the assembly include EX to EX-MT examples of 51-Henley (90-10 centering), 55-Mosca, 67-Faloney (90-10 centering) and 110-Parker. Card #33 of Tommy Joe Coffey is seen as being in the vicinity of VG-EX to EX with light corner wear while card #96 of Ron Lancaster is thought of as being in VG to VG-EX condition with a tiny crease found at the top right corner. Finally, cards in the vicinity of GOOD include those of 2-Kapp (light creases) and 132-Checklist 61-132 that show corner wear and has been marked. Additionally, an additional copy of Angelo Mosca’s card is included, falling into the grade range of VG to VG-EX.
