Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/28/2023
The singing of O’Canada from coast to coast occurred directly after the conclusion of the Summit Series in 1972, with our entire nation completely enthralled by the victorious battle for world hockey supremacy. Famously won on the goal by Paul Henderson in game 8 with 34 seconds left, offered here is this seldom seen 1972 “Go Team Canada” double sided banner from Labatt’s that was produced for use during the famous Summit Series. Measuring 39 ¾” x 86 ½” and made of a heavyweight vinyl material, metal eyelets are found around the perimeter of the piece. Double sided and displaying the same graphics over each side, a large “Go Team Canada” with a hockey stick made into the image of a Canadian flag is found at the top along with a generic picture of a hockey player. The bottom of the banner shows the Labatt’s logo along with “Canada/USSR Hockey Series”. Remaining in good condition with minor scuffs and marks throughout along with some dirt and faint yellowing to the material, some heavier wear to the threading at the edges and to the top edge via a couple tears to the material. The graphics display in near perfect condition on both sides.
Addendum; the auction house description from when the banner was previously sold stated that the banner came from a Toronto based family who obtained the banner at Maple Leaf Gardens and that the banner hung for the Summit Series game played there.
