Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction December 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/13/2022
Missing the entirety of the 1953 season due to military service, Willie Mays picked up right where he left off and cruised to the National League MVP Award in 1954 and leading the New York Giants to a World Series crown over the Cleveland Indians with “The Catch” made in game 1. Shown here smiling ear to ear is Mays on the front of his 1954 Bowman card, #89 in the set. A bit off center top-to-bottom and left-to-right, the card has earned the mark of VG-EX 4 by PSA. Retaining beautiful colours and fairly white borders, the corners show touches of wear with a small wrinkle seen at the bottom left point as well as light crease opposite it in the bottom right. A clean back is observed on the reverse side while the PSA holder shows light scratches and scuffs over both sides.
