Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction December 2022

Willard’s Chocolate’s scarce 1923 issue, a 180-card release, is represented by ten cards here, headlined by that George Herman Ruth guy, with a nice shot of Babe watching one of his long blasts just after following through. With superior eye appeal to a heavily or multi-creased PR 1 card is the offered example, its black photo album paper on the reverse leading to PSA’s recent assessment. A small crease can be seen in the left border, while viewing the PSA Population Report confirms scarcity, with just 13 Ruth V100 cards ever encapsulated by the grading firm. The nine other cards were similarly once pasted, with one, (after our experiment), confirming that the black paper can be removed. Leading the rest of the lineup are Hall of Famers George Sisler, Red Faber and Herb Pennock, as well as longtime stars Hank Gowdy and Joe Judge. Completing are Bob Meusel, Johnny Morrison, Allen Russell and Ralph Young. Condition throughout mostly mirrors that of the Ruth card, with either no creases or one small peripheral crease observed. Exceptions are Meusal (two creases) and Young, the latter with a corner ding and a smidgeon of paper loss on the front. Babe and company await your pre-war shrine.
