Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023

A trio of O-Pee-Chee offerings from the mid-to-late-1970s capturing the images of players in both the NHL and rival WHA is up for grabs here in this lot consisting of a complete 1976-77 set as well as complete 1974-75 and 1976-77 WHA sets. Starting with the mainline NHL assembly, the 396-card set is in a nice consistent EX-MT condition range with some better examples present as well. Lead by Bryan Trottier’s rookie card which is found in the vicinity of EX-MT/NM in our opinion, his rookie record breaker cardboard is seen in the same condition range while displaying with 60-40 centering. Examples found a touch below around EX-MT include 70-Clarke (tiny factory mark at the top edge), 163-Lafleur, 200-Dryden and 213-Orr. The team checklist cards remain unmarked while the main checklist offerings are unmarked as well with one in the range of EX-MT/NM, one around EX-MT and the last one closer to VG due to creases. Other stars not listed above are consistent condition wise with the rest of the set.
The ’74-75 ensemble from the rival league, consisting of 66-cards is found here in a nice uniform EX-MT condition with a few exceptions and includes a very nice unmarked EX-MT/NM checklist at card #53. Highlights include EX-MT/NM offerings of cards 17-Hedberg, 40-Mahovlich and 64-Plante with EX-MT specimens of 1-The Howes, 4-Nilsson and 50-Hull. Card #30 of Gerry Cheevers is closer to VG condition due to a pinhole through his forehead (surely garnering the need for another stitch on his classic mask!)
Lastly, the ’76-77 WHA assembly consists of 132 total cards and is found in a consistent EX-MT condition range with some better EX-MT/NM examples and displaying OPC’s commonly seen centering issues. Once again featuring a top shelf quality checklist in the vicinity of EX-MT/NM (70-30 centering), cards #72 of Gordie Howe (All-Star, 80-20 centering) and #111 of Frank Mahovlich are seen in a mirroring EX-MT/NM range while 50-Howe is regarded in the scope of EX-MT+ due to slight wear to the top left corner. The late great Bobby Hull’s offerings, cards #65 (All-Star) and #100 respectively, fall around a nice EX-MT range despite 90-10 and 80-20 centering. A surely wonderful trip down memory lane awaits our lucky winning bidder!
