Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023

The focal point of any gathering of 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee cards, if present, is of course Wayne Gretzky’s iconic rookie card, with The Great One appearing here in EX-MT 6 form and housed in a close to perfect PSA holder to highlight this batch. Displaying with pleasing centering and striking colours, a trio of surface dings along with a couple of blue print lines on the reverse near the comic are surely the most obvious imperfections keeping this example from achieving a higher mark. Overall, a strong set condition wise with the accompanying 395-cards making up this assembly in consistent EX-MT condition with many that reach a tad higher and are closer to the EX-MT/NM range. Many of the key cards in the set reach for the sky and pull out that higher grade of EX-MT/NM in our opinion including 125-Clarke (a 2nd Clarke card is also present which is closer to EX-MT), 175-Howe, 200-Lafleur and 230-Bossy. Others that mirror the commonly seen condition scope of EX-MT include the likes of 150-Dryden and 185-Hull. Featuring doubles of cards number 6, 8, 23, 30, 90, 98, 100, 125 (mentioned above), 128, 171, 176, 187, 215, 270, 298 and 321, the three checklists remain unmarked with #346 showing a pin hole at the top border. Additionally, the team checklists and three logo cards of the Jets, Oilers and Whalers are also unmarked and are in a condition that is consistent with the rest of the set’s offerings.
