Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/28/2023
A lot that spans the first half of the 1980s and just touches on the early-1990s, offered here is this collection of complete O-Pee-Chee sets from 1980-81, 1981-82, 1983-84, 1984-85 and 1990-91. Featuring average conditions of EX range for the ’80-81 and ’84-85 sets with the ’81-82 and ’83-84 assembly’s better off and presenting in the condition range of EX-MT/NM. Star cards of a single player, Wayne Gretzky are prominently featured throughout all the available offerings with the cards displaying his hockey holiness displaying largely in conditions that is uniform with the sets that they come out of with a couple of exceptions including card #126 in the 1981-82 set that is viewed as poor. Chalked full of rookie card potential that is sure to be appealing to both collector and dealer/investor alike, first year offerings from 1980-81 (Goulet, Bourque, Gartner, Messier, Langway) are all in the condition range of EX except for the Messier which is closer to EX/EX-MT in our opinion despite its 65-35 centering. For the 1981-82 ensemble (Savard, Coffey, Stastny, Kurri, Moog), the first three are in the scope of EX-MT/NM while the latter two display closer to the range of EX-MT due to light corner dings. Skipping a year and moving to the ’83-84 grouping (Lindberg, Stevens), both of the key rookies remain in the desirable and appealing condition vicinity of EX-MT/NM with the Lindberg showing 70-30 centering over the front. Lastly, the 1984-85 set (LaFontaine, Gilmour, Neely, Yzerman) show the first two listed in the range of EX-MT/NM, Neely around EX-MT and Stevie-Y in the vicinity of EX. With numerous star offerings of Bourque, Messier and others joining the previously mentioned quantity of Gretzky specimens, we’re sure our lucky winning bidder will be in for more pleasant surprises than unpleasant ones. Of note, the 1990-91 set is a factory example that while opened, doesn’t appear to ever have been handled.
