Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023

Found in O-Pee-Chee packs that contained 14 cards and that cost kids/collectors 20 cents during the 1979-80 season were blue-bordered cards like these, with that of Wayne Gretzky surely coveted by season’s end as the scrawny teenage whiz kid from Brantford, Ontario proved he could “play with the big boys”…and how! Nobody totaled more points than Wayne and now no other hockey rookie card carries more appeal among the hobby’s masses than iconic #18, offered here after recently receiving a mark of VG-EX 4 at PSA headquarters. Off-center a bit top-to-bottom and with light wear to the corners and edges, the card is still a pleasing copy of “The Great One’s” first year offering. The accompanying 395-cards we would rate in the condition neighbourhood of VG on average with keys including 40-Salming, 185-Hull, 200-Lafleur and 230-Bossy sharing the VG vicinity while those of 150-Dryden and 175-Howe are a bit better falling closer towards VG-EX territory in our opinion. 125-Clarke is noteworthy for the wrong reasons, with this example being heavily creased. All three checklist cards are found having been marked as are the logo cards of the Oilers and Jets while remaining in similar VG condition. With the Gretzky securely housed in a PSA holder that remains free from scratches/scuffs, the lucky winning bidder will be pleased with this iconic assembly.
