Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2022

The late LeRoy Neiman had a keen eye for identifying and interpreting sports talent, and the renowned American artist put one in the top corner with this dazzlingly colorful rendition of the young Wayne Gretzky. Neiman, who died in June 2012 at the age of 91, has signed in pencil on the bottom right of this "The Great Gretzky" poster from 1981, while The Great One has placed his huge pencil signature on the bottom left. Measuring approximately 22” x 35” and displayed within a 28 ½” x 41” frame with off-white matte, it appears in excellent condition with just some light wear to the frame to note.
Neiman, renowned for brilliantly colored, stunningly energetic images of sporting events and leisure activities, was able to convey the essence of a game or contestant with great impact, from the Kentucky Derby to Wilt Chamberlain, from the America's Cup to Muhammad Ali, from the Super Bowl to Bobby Hull, and of course, the Great One himself. Wonderful Neiman creation, it captures the on-ice aura and fluid movement of one of the game's greatest skaters.
