Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/28/2023
The last Toronto Maple Leafs team to capture Lord Stanley’s coveted trophy despite being regarded as too old due to an average age of 31, the blue and white knocked off both the Chicago Black Hawks and the heavily favoured Montreal Canadiens to capture the club’s 13th Stanley Cup Championship during their 50th season of play. Offered here, we have this stick attributed to have been used by Allan Stanley that is team-signed by 18 members of the 1966-67 Cup Champion Maple Leafs that comes with great provenance
Consigned to us by the godson of former Maple Leafs captain, Jim Thompson, the consignor’s father was also friends with the penalty timekeeper at Maple Leaf Gardens who was the one that gave them the stick after a game during the 1966-67 season. Attributed to have been used by Allan Stanley, the CCM Custom Pro model stick with a faded “26” stamp on the upper shaft, retains vintage white tape over the handle/knob and black on the blade with some having been removed. Showing heavy cracks and wear to the blade/heel, numerous dark black marks along with blue ones are exhibited over the shaft and heel. Of note, due to the lack of past sold examples and photo evidence it is unconfirmed it these are in fact Stanley’s tape jobs or not.
Featuring the signatures of eighteen (18) members of the team, those that have signed the stick include Tommy Naylor (trainer), Brian Conacher, Frank Mahovlich, Red Kelly, Tim Horton (ink), George Armstrong, Allan Stanley (ink), Dave Keon (ink), Bobby Baun, Jim Pappin (ink), Terry Sawchuk, Pete Stemkowski, Ed Shack (not signed - stamp), Marcel Pronovost, Johnny Bower, Ron Ellis (ink), Bob Haggert (trainer) and Larry Jeffrey. All the autographs except the Ed Shack stamp remain legible and are easily read, with the stamp showing heavy fading.
