Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction December 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/13/2022
March 20th, 1971, a seemingly common and insignificant game between the Montreal Canadiens and Buffalo Sabres became special very quickly when both Ken and Dave Dryden opposed each other in goal, becoming the only brothers to ever face each other in goal at the NHL level. The younger Ken and the Habs would get the best of the Sabres by a score of 5-2, with the two brothers shaking hands at centre ice after the contest in what has become an iconic image of the game.
Offered here is this lot consisting of a Ken Dryden 1971-72 Montreal Canadiens Sher-Wood rookie season game stick, a Dave Dryden early-1970s game-used stick and a photo of the brothers handshake that has been signed by both combatants. Starting with Ken’s stick, the Sher-Wood branded lumber has “29 Dryden” stamped over the upper shaft with the production date of “20 Mar. 1972” stamped on the lower back edge of the paddle. “Sher-Wood” is stamped on each side of the shaft and paddle while an additional stamp, likely the name of a previous owner, is also found on each side as well near the bottom of the shaft. The paddle accent stripes remain present and intact. Sporting vintage white tape over the handle/knob and black on the blade, the tape job on the knob differs from those usually seen of a Dryden stick of that era. Exhibiting only light wear, a couple of black puck marks are seen to the paddle and heel with one on the upper shaft as well. Remaining in excellent condition and free from cracks or breaks, because of the lack or real game wear and the different tape job on the knob we are offering this stick as a game stick only.
The Dave Dryden stick, made by Louisville Slugger, has “Dryden” stamped over the shaft. A Northern Pro model void of any stamping on the paddle, the original white tape job is found over the handle and knob as well as the blade while additional white cloth wrappings are affixed to the bottom of the handle and crisscrossed over the middle. Free from cracks or breaks, the sick shows a couple puck marks over the taped section of the blade as well both sides of the paddle. Of note, the heel of the stick has been shaved down to a rounded shape.
The last piece included is an 8” x 10” photo of the Dryden brothers handshake on March 20th, 1971 that has been signed by both under their respective images in blue ink. Both autographs display well with some fading and wear present. The photograph itself remains in good shape, free from creasing but showing wrinkles along the bottom edge as well as toning
