Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/27/2023
A fabulous opportunity to score a coveted pre-war hockey card near complete set is offered here, with the charming little cards found almost a century ago in sweets produced by Maple Crispette, a Montreal confectioner. Kids/collectors could exchange a 30-card set for a pair of new skates, with Sprague Cleghorn’s card short-printed to limit the amount of contest redemptions and thus considered rare. Missing cards 11-Boucher, 19-Rothschild and 21-Burch to make a complete assembly, also not included is the aforementioned card of Sprague Cleghorn (short print). Led by freshly graded PSA examples of HOFers Howie Morenz and George Vezina, the elite pairing have garnered grades of FR 1.5 and GOOD 2 respectively while a third card, that of Canadiens teammate Aurel Joliat was also sent in for grading but has come back as “altered” and therefore not holdered. Featuring previously slabbed offerings in the form of Norman Fowler (PSA VG+ 3.5), Fred Lowrey (PSA VG 3) and Clint Benedict (SGC GOOD 2). For the rest of the group, all found in raw ungraded form, a G to VG example of Jim Herberts’ RC leads the way and is followed by the cards of 18-Broadbent, 22-Green, 26-Langlois RC and 29-Scott RC in the vicinity of GOOD. With the specimens of 4-Headley RC, 6-Cook RC and 8-Herberts RC all in the scope of FR to G, cards seen as being FR make up the largest group and include the likes of 5-Skinner RC, 9-Cooper RC, 10-Green, 16-Cain RC, 20-Carroll RC, 23-Roach, 24-Randall, 25-Forbes, 27-Lalonde and 30-Berlinquette RC. Lastly, cards viewed as PR include those of 1-Munro RC and 17-Dinsmore RC. Additionally, also accompanying the near complete set are six (6) extra cards including two copies of Aurel Joliat’s cardboard (PR to FR and FR conditions, one with multiple creases the other with a large crease). For the other three (3) FR condition range cards, those of 3-Fowler (RC – small paper loss and a stain), 7-Herberts (paper loss + stain), 27-Lalonde (multiple light creases) are present while a copy of card #29, the rookie card of Ganton Scott, is seen as being the vicinity of GOOD with a light crease to make mention of.
