Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/28/2023
A complete set of the very first hockey cards, available to consumers in packages of cigarettes well over 100 years ago and offered to serious collectors here constitutes a hobby happening, with several of the men responsible for making early professional hockey a happening featured amid the three dozen well-preserved darlings. Having all been freshly graded by PSA and recently received back from their headquarters, we are thrilled to share that 28 of the 36 offerings that make up the offered complete assembly have earned grades of VG or better. All designated as rookie cards, the first group of six (6) PSA slabs housing the cards of some of the most prominent hockey forefathers to be featured on the small cardboard specimens is lead condition-wise by card #12 of Art Ross and card #36 of Newsy Lalonde, both of which have been deemed worth of a VG+ 3.5 designation for their efforts while being followed up by VG 3 examples of #8 Art Ross and #15 Fred "Cyclone" Taylor, a GOOD+ 2.5 of #26 Lester Patrick and a GOOD 2 of his brother, Frank Patrick. Continuing on, card #33, picturing Jack Marshall of the Montreal Wanders over the front, takes the top of the podium in terms of the highest graded card of the set, displaying a stunning NM 7 designation over it's PSA label and is followed in close contention by an EX of Tom Dunderdale and a trio of VG-EX 4's including #3 Gordon Roberts, #7 Marty Walsh and #10 Harry Hyland while the card of Ottawa Senators goaltender Percy LeSueur presents with a VG 3 mark to its name. For the rest of the set, all housed in fresh and flawless PSA slabs, EX 5's are present for #31 Horace Gaul and #35 of Jack Marshall while VG-EX 4's include the likes of #6 Edgar Day, #9 Angus Campbell, #13 Ed Decary, #17 Bruce Stuart, #24 Skinner Poulin, #27 Fred Lake (Carries an "MC" qualifier on its label) and #29 C. Toms. For cards falling into the category of VG 3, featured are the cardboard specimens of #4 Barney Holden, #11 Herb Clark, #20 Ernest Russell, #22 Riley Hern, #23 Didier Pitre, #25 Art Bernier, #30 Ernest Johnston, #32 Harold McNamara and #34 Bruce Ridpath. Rounding out the set, those of #5 Pud Glass, #16 Joseph Cattarinich, #18 Nick Bawlf (Carries and "MK" qualifier on its label) and #19 Jim Jones all sport marks of GOOD 2 while Jack Laviolette displays a FR 1.5 and Paddy Moran has earned a PR 1. A true treasure to behold that is worthy of serious consideration.
