Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/19/2023
Sporting a 264-card checklist, Topps’ 1980-81 hockey release featured something that had never been tried in any sport's base set, trying to determine whether there was any interest in the concept, the company placed a scratch-off area over the player's name. Offered here in near-complete form, is this assembly of Topps' 1980-81 hockey release that includes 260 of the 264 cards making up the set with all never having had the player name area scratched. Paced by freshly graded examples of Ray Bourque's rookie card and Wayne Gretzky's sophomore cardboard, the Bourque offering was deemed worthy of a NM 7 assessment and presents with its image over the front off-center from left-to-right as well as bottom-to-top while the Gretzky displays a mark of EX-MT 6 for its effort, sporting pleasing side-to-side centering but off from bottom-to-top. For the rest of the set, missing cards #10, #51, #55 and #174 to be complete, is generally found to be in a condition range that mirrors the graded cards of Bourque and Gretzky (EX-MT to NM) with the other key RC's of Michel Goulet and Mike Gartner (Goulet has a small ding at the bottom right corner while Gartner has a surface dent at the top left) following this pattern along with the key cards of 2-Bourque Record Breaker, 3-Gretzky Record Breaker, 87-Gretzky All-Star, 162-Assist Leaders, 163-Scoring Leaders and 182-Gretzky Goals Leader/Oilers Checklist. With the two main series and all the team checklists unmarked, a good time awaits the high bidder here.
