Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction December 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/13/2022
The most important signature in any advanced hockey collection, Lord Frederick Arthur Stanley served as Governor General of Canada from 1888 to 1893, at which time he famously donated the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup – later to be known as the Stanley Cup. We offer a signature cut from the legendary politician, with this specimen penned after his accession as the 16th Earl of Derby, as it is signed simply “Derby”. At approx. 2 3/8'' x 1 1/4”, the small rectangular sheet displays light toning with old photo corners found at 3 of the 4 corners with the top left corner having been cut at the line where the holder would have been. Remaining clean and displaying without issue, the ink the signature was signed with has oxidized over time appearing a sort of rusty grey. A hologram sticker is found affixed to the reverse. The piece will come accompanied by a Classic Auctions LOA as well as an additional LOA to match the hologram.
