Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2021
Taking the mighty Canadian institution to the motherland, hockey in Great Britain is believed to have been first featured at the collegiate level, with Oxford battling Cambridge in the first English match ever played, and we offer a program team-signed by both schools from an Inter-Varsity match that occurred in February of 1939 (a second matching unsigned example in low grade is also included). Accompanying the rarely seen team-signed specimen, we have an equally rare English hockey program for an exhibition match between the Montreal Canadiens and Detroit Red Wings, played at Empress Hall, April 21, 1938. The Oxford vs Cambridge program has been signed by 21, with 11 Oxford players and 9 Cambridge players along with the referee in matching blue ink. A number of signers were quite notable, including Albert Richie; Canadian ambassador to the US, received the Order of Canada in 1975, Donald Duffie; President of St Thomas University in New Brunswick from 1961 to 1975, Henry Hicks; Royal Canadian Artillery captain, served as Premier of Nova Scotia from 1954 to 1956, President of Dalhousie University and Order of Canada recipient, Allan Thompson; McGill graduate and RCAC member, served as Surgeon-in-Chief at Montreal General, and Raymond LaBarge; Served during WWII, became Deputy-Minister of Customs and Excise in the National Revenue Ministry in Ottawa. The Canadiens vs Red Wings exhibition program features Babe Siebert, Toe Blake, Eddie Goodfellow and Syd Howe in the line-ups, with photos of George Mantha, Normie Smith, Mud Bruneteau, Jack Adams and others. The collegiate program shows moderate wear with the signatures displaying well, while the exhibition program also shows light to moderate wear with rusting to the staples and a blemish over the back cover.
