Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020

One of the most famous and successful of all early hockey teams, and first competing at the 1884 Montreal Winter Carnival, the Ottawa Hockey Club was the first organized team in Ontario, and later served as a founding member of the National Hockey League. The club would utilize numerous nicknames throughout their existence, including the Generals in the 19th century, the Silver Seven from 1903 to approx 1907, and most famously, the Senators, beginning in 1908. This extremely rare cabinet photo of the historic club is noteworthy on several levels. First, this is the only example of this image we have ever encountered and the only 19th century Ottawa Hockey Club photo we have ever offered. Second, the image features three of the club’s most venerated early players, including goaltender Bouse Hutton – the earliest-playing netminder in the HOF, Harvey Pulford – four-time Stanley Cup champion with Ottawa, and Hod Stuart – captain and drowning victim. Third, this was the rookie seasons of Stuart and Hutton! This is unequivocally one of the greatest antique team photos we have ever handled.
At 10” x 13”, with the mount a full 16” x 20”, and picturing the team in composite images, “Intermediate Champions C.A.H.L.” appears centered beneath the images, with the celebrated photographer Pittaway listed along the base and impressed into the mount. The sepia image itself exhibits expected minor toning along with a few very small blemishes, with a couple small edge tears to the mount along with chipping, with toning and spotting over the reverse.
