Embarking on an especially successful period for the Detroit Red Wings, the 1950s witnessed the club finish in first place in each of the decade’s first five seasons. Detroit would claim four Stanley Cup championships from 1949 to 1954. Originating from the incomparable autograph collection of E. Robert Hamlyn, we have a team-signed sheet hailing from Terry Sawchuk’s first full season in Motor City in 1950-51, accompanied by a typed letter from 1950 signed by Wings coach Tommy Ivan. At 5 ½” x 7”, the card stock sheet features two rows of flawless black ink signatures including deceased HOFers Sawchuk, Howe, Abel, Lindsay, Kelly and coach Ivan. The May 17, 1950 Tommy Ivan letter is 8 ½” x 11” and on Red Wings Olympia stationary, with the coach adding a beautiful blue ink signature that displays divinely. Ivan was enshrined as a builder in 1974, passing in 1999 at age 88.
With absolutely no issues for the signatures, with the Sawchuk and Howe placed above/below each other, the team-signed sheet shows handling wear, with paper residue over the reverse from scrapbook removal. The letter also shows just light wear, with a pair of faint horizontal fold lines, with holes punched along the top section to facilitate binder insertion.
