Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/20/2023
Lacing up their skates one last time, a number of past NHL and early hockey stars met for battle in 1954 in an Ontario vs Quebec old veterans match. Originating from the incomparable autograph collection of E. Robert Hamlyn, we have a multi-signed and framed display from the event signed by approx 45 including 20 deceased HOFers. With the signatures gathered for Hamlyn by HOFer Jack Marshall - this is noted in the accompanying copy of a 1954 letter addressed to Hamlyn by Ernie Russell. At just over 14" x 17", the signers all appear in two vertical rows, with their teams and/or years active listed to the right of the signatures. The deceased HOFers include Mike Grant, Busher Jackson, Joe Primeau, Roy Conacher, Nels Stewart, Chas Conacher, Lionel Conacher, Dit Clapper, Bil Cowley, Kenny Reardon, Harry Hyland, Elmer Lach, Newsy Lalonde, Joe Malone, Sylvio Mantha, Buddy O'Connor, Hooley Smith, Toe Blake, Bill Durnan and Red Dutton, along with Lorne Duguid, Billy Taylor, Red Heron, Butch Keeling, Bill Thoms, Hank Goldup, Jimmie Fowler, Art Marshall, Bob Haggert, (Billy Way ??? Wanderers), Dave Campbell, Archie Wilcox, (Dick ??? Nationals), Paul Haynes, Gerry Hefferman, Pete Morin, Art Boyce, Ray Getliffe, Des Smith, Johnny Gagnon, Leo Bourgault, Bob Fillion, Russ Blinco and Claude Bourque. We should note that this is only the second signature of prominent HOFer Mike Grant that we have ever seen, and with all the signatures evenly spaced and dark and bold, the break-up value is considerable. Newspaper clippings of the match have been glued to the reverse of the frame, with a note from Hamlyn mentioning he received this in 1954 from Marshall.
