Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/7/2017
Highly desirable and extremely rare - especially in full document form, we have a military commission from 1879 that has been signed by both Queen Victoria along with the individual responsible for the Stanley Cup, Lord Stanley of Preston. At roughly 13” x 16” (open), the folded antique document features wonderful fountain pen script, with an affixed seal on the first page along with the signature of Queen Victoria along the top section. The second page features additional script with Lord Stanley signing beneath as Fred Stanley. Both signatures remain dark and are stand-alone examples. The document itself displays wear and toning, especially along the century-old fold lines. Included is a letter addressed to the recipient of the military commission dated 20 September 1879 that accompanied the document. High caliber Lord Stanley signatures rarely make themselves available, with each example greatly contested as it is one of the most important signature in all of hockey.
