Saddled with the arduous task of both shadowing the greatest Russian superstar in Valeri Kharlamov and staving off a final Soviet attack after Paul Henderson’s immortal goal, Ron Ellis’ contribution’s to the Summit Series effort were paramount. Ellis would play in each of the 8 games, finishing with three assists and an impressive +3 in the plus/minus category. We are pleased to be able to offer to the collecting community Ron Ellis’ Team Canada Summit Series jersey worn in the Moscow contests, and it’s been signed and photo-matched! Originally gifted to Johnny Esaw, the Vice President of the Canadian Television Network by Alan Eagleson, the jersey was then later given to Esaw’s son, Pat.
Maska tagging is affixed to the collar, with just the remnants of a second label to its right. Featuring the rising red maple leaf on front, single-layer tackle twill numbers and letters grace the reverse with “6” and “Canada”. Equipped with custom-shortened sleeves, the inside layer of white material beneath the red maple leaf has been trimmed out to make the jersey lighter, which was a typical customization for this iconic set as we’ve observed matching examples worn by Brad Park, Dennis Hull, Yvan Cournoyer, and the famous $1.275-million dollar Henderson jersey.
As previously mentioned, this important Summit Series jersey has been photo-matched. A number of Getty Images from the Moscow games including #57349918, #57360351, #136277742, #136277743 and #148941433 have been matched to numerous black marks on the right sleeve and back, including to an on-ice Team Canada group celebration photo after Paul Henderson scored the series-winning goal during game #8! Every surviving Summit Series jersey is extremely desirable, and considering the monumental task of shadowing the legendary Valeri Kharlamov, this example worn by Ron Ellis is definitely deserving of the utmost importance in stature. Few garments in existence can rival in historic significance those worn in the most important international hockey tournament ever played.
Stored and displayed for an undetermined amount of time in a frame, evidence has been left on the jersey as it was affixed with tape that was placed against the material, along the upper and lower sections. The lower back has also been cut in spots from side to side along the border at the top of the hem, with remnants of tape still adhered and sticky beneath the front hem. There is some staining along the collar and over the right shoulder, with a ton of black marks littering the upper and lower right sleeve. Additional black marks are present on verso near the middle right seam, and to the right of the “6”. Ellis has signed just above the right breast in black marker adding his number and the date of the series-clinching 8th game, with the signature displaying beautifully.
