Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2016
Rarely seen and years in the making, this one-of-a-kind collection features 50 photos of legendary Formula One driver Gilles Villeneuve. A winner of six Grand Prix races, Villeneuve began Formula One with McLaren Racing in 1977, moving on to and staying with Ferrari from late in 1977, until the devastating crash at Zolder in 1982 while qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix which sadly took his life. We have 13 original 8” x 10” photos taken by noted lensman Denis Brodeur including 2 Formula Atlantic photos (Direct Film), 18 original photos also by Brodeur, ranging in size from roughly 3 ½” x 6” to 6 ¼” x 8 ¼”, 18 European period photos averaging 6 3/8” x 8 3/8” and lastly, a 1982 wire photo relating to Villeneuve's fatal crash at the Zolder track, showing an Oct. 23rd 1977 file picture.
Most of the Brodeur photos are stamped and dated on the reverse, with some having publication papers affixed, while a number of the European images have stamps/stickers with inventory numbers listed. With Villeneuve’s cult status, we need to stress how important this grouping is as an archive, with both track and car shots, along with candid moments of the legend captured. Most of the photos exhibit just expected handling wear from use, with no obtrusive damage or unsightly condition issues whatsoever.
