Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2016
Rarely seen especially in quantity, this group of 7 Sweet Caporal photos were part of the 48 picture set presented by Imperial Tobacco and inserted into Canadiens and Maroons programs at the Forum. Included we have Hall of Famer Ching Johnson, along with Gus Marker, Jimmy Ward, Cy Wentworth, Stewart Evans and the key to the set, Howie Morenz. All roughly 6 ¾” x 9 ½”, each paper-stock picture contains the players biography on the reverse, along with additional advertising for Sweet Caporal. The Morenz supplement is in French, while the other six have text listed in English. While not on the radar of most collectors due to their scarcity, these 7 supplements are ideal for the individual willing to take on the arduous but rewarding task of attempting to complete the set.
The condition breakdown for each of the offered supplements is as follows. 1) Howie Morenz. Heavy creasing is visible in the lower section, along with some light spotting/staining and toning. There is also a centralized pinhole along the top border. 2) Ching Johnson. A few light surface marks and small creases are on the lower front along with some spotting on the right edge. The reverse has some toning along with a few surface dents on the left side. 3) Blady Northcott. A few surface scratches and creases are on the front, while the reverse shows toning and surface dents along with paper loss at each corner from a former mounting. There is also residue and surface loss just above the name bar. 4) Stewart Evans. The front has some creasing present especially in the upper right corner, along with surface dents. The reverse remains fairly clean, with the creasing from the right corner front continuing through to the reverse. 5) Cy Wentworth. The front exhibits surface dents along with a few creases and scratches. There is also a tiny area of paper loss on the left hand side along with a tiny edge tear, with a slight bend to the lower left corner. The reverse remains fairly clean, with a few of the front creases continuing through to the reverse. 6) Jimmy Ward. A number of creases and scratches are present on the front, with some spots of discolouration to the reverse. 7) Gus Marker. The supplement exhibits surface dents on the front, with paper loss/residue to all four corners of the reverse from a former mounting. There is also a white sticker that’s been added above the name bar that has “Montreal Maroons” handwritten in black, with a section that’s been coloured-in.
