Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2016
As an act of respect and allegiance to the queen regnant, the use of the word “Victoria” among sporting clubs in the late 19th century was commonplace in Canada. A number of hockey teams choose this formal sobriquet, chiefly Montreal and Winnipeg. This pair of antique 10K gold cufflinks probably originate with the more prominent Victoria Hockey Club of Montreal, as “VHC” is engraved on one in attractive lettering, with “1898-99” beneath. The other link has a pair of crossed hockey sticks engraved, with a puck placed above. At roughly ¾” from top to bottom, the oval shaped cufflinks have “10K” along with the hallmark of a maple leaf with an inserted “E” on the reverse.
Hockey’s first dynasty, the Montreal Victorias claimed the Stanley Cup four years running from 1895 through 1898 and challenged the Ottawa Silver Seven for the grail once more in 1903. The historic squad played its first game back in 1883 at the Montreal Winter Carnival and continued well into the 1900’s in the Canadian Amateur Hockey League. Their home ice, the Victoria Skating Rink is recognized by the IIHF as the birthplace of organized hockey.
There is some dirt on the reverse of each to note, along with some surface wear and light scratches. There is also a pair of small indentations to the link with the crossed hockey sticks, with this link also missing the back connection bar.
